This new release from singer/songwriter Beccy Owen is a five-track E.P. of original songs that were each conceived, written and recorded in under a day over the course of five separate days.
This is the first offering from the acclaimed singer/songwriter since her last album "Down With Gravity" and it is a teasing, hypnotic prelude to a brand new full length album, IMAGO, due out in December and available for pre-order here on bandcamp:
"Drink" is the spark that dances in the gap of a lively past and a buoyant future for this full-hearted, dynamic musician.
Four of the five songs here emerged out of Beccy's most recent "songathon", where she challenged herself to write s song a day for a month, the other ("The Boy With The Eyes") was written on a previous day. As a result of this prolific method, there is a sense of the singer's darkly tinged surrender to the music itself. At the same time her voice has never sounded richer, fuller or more lived-in.
Five years between records would be an aeon for many solo singer/songwriter, but Beccy Owen has been busy with her chamber-pop band Sharks Took The Rest (who tour release their own debut album this March/April) as well as writing and performing new theatre across the North of England.
The band, a car crash, moving to Yorkshire, health issues and the directorship of two community choirs have been among the many things that kept her away from solo duties for a while.
With the passage of time and such a rich schedule of experiences, it's no wonder that this new E.P. - the fifth release on Beccy's DIY Fairy Snuff, and the first download-only release - is somewhat of a departure from her previous material.
Beccy wrote, recorded, and produced "Drink" on her own, adding electronic instruments to her repertoire, and employing a sparse and naked production value. What you hear on each track is what was written and recorded within the same day. This lends the songs a sense of immediacy with a candidness and authenticity that has become a staple element of Beccy's live shows.
**** "Drink" is available for download for a limited time only. Please do your bit for DIY music and spread the word. *****
