BEHOLD! Here is the unofficial anthem for the first ever Olympic #TeamRefugees, written by Beccy Owen and Boff Whalley. Performed by The Team Refugees Pop-Up Choir, All Hallows' Church, Leeds, learned and recorded the night before the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony (the same night we learned it!)
You can download it for as much or as little money as you can spare. All profits will go to PAFRAS (Positive Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers)
It's an historic moment. At this year's Olympic Games the first fully affiliated 'Team Refugees' are competing. Ten inspiring athletes will take part under the Olympic Flag and will take the Generic Olympic anthem as their music.
Singer/songwriter Beccy Owen (Joy Atlas) heard this news and thought it only right to write the team a bespoke - albeit unofficial - Olympic anthem.
With the songwriting help of Boff Whalley (Chumbawamba), the word-of-mouth clout of social media, some awesome banner-makers, photographers, filmmakers, a free venue and hundreds of willing singers, the idea gathered momentum.
Until one summer evening, the night before the Olympic Opening Ceremony, over 200 people from across West Yorkshire and beyond came together as a one-off 'Pop-Up Choir' to learn and record the world premiere of 'The World Is Our Song’. It was surprising. It was purposeful. And it was MAGICAL.
This Unofficial Anthem has been officially released via Bandcamp as a 'pay what you feel' single. DOWNLOAD IT NOW at www.beccyowen.bandcamp.com
Okay, great. NOW: please help to spread the word about the song, tweet about it (#TeamRefugees), teach it to your family/neighbours/choir, tell your people, tell the press, tell anyone who might like to join the celebration and to show love, support and solidarity for #TeamRefugees and all refugees everywhere. Standing alongside, with one voice.
